Sharing birthday joy with children in Latin America

At The Good Registry, we love seeing Good people doing Good things for Good causes.

And Loren O’Sullivan is definitely one of those!

Loren is Director at one of our partner charities, NPH NZ, and has pledged her own birthday with The Good Registry to support this wonderful cause.

Loren’s 30th birthday is on 29 September — and she says it was an easy choice to ask friends and family not to give her material gifts and to donate to NPH NZ instead.

Because of her role in the charity, Loren sees the brilliant work NPH does and the impact it has on the lives of children and families in Latin America.

Loren’s journey with NPH began in 2013–2014, as a volunteer English teacher and caregiver at a children’s home in Honduras.

In 2015 Loren returned to New Zealand and volunteered at the New Zealand fundraising branch of NPH. A couple years on and here she is, still doing good as the director of NPH NZ (and organisation that she now describes as a second family)!

NPH helps thousands of vulnerable children and families in nine countries across Latin America. They support children who have been orphaned or are unable to live with their biological families for safety and medical reasons, as well as helping families who struggle to make ends meet.

NPH aims to help break the cycle of poverty through community clinics, schools, hospitals, and women empowerment programmes.

Like a lot of people, Loren feels a lot of pressure when it comes to giving and receiving material gifts. She says she believes that giving the gift of a donation is more beneficial than getting something from a shop. Therefore, it made sense to her to ask for her family and friends to donate to NPH. The donations to her birthday registry will go to the under 5 children's home in Honduras that she volunteered with back in 2013-14.

“I think the joy of birthdays and presents really belong to children…I would rather offer my birthday to children who really need the basics in life — a safe loving home, education, medical attention and healthy food. I was lucky enough to have a great childhood so it’s a great feeling to be able to pass this on.”

Just the other day, Loren was reading a letter written by a child to their NZ sponsor in which the child wrote, “here at NPH I feel really happy and protected.” :-)

The immense impact that Kiwis are having by sponsoring a child, or supporting NPH NZ in any way, is truly heart-warming and inspiring.

If you would like to gift a donation to NPH through Loren’s birthday registry, you can do so here — her registry will stay open for donations for 10 days after her birthday on the 29th.

To learn more about the incredible work NPH NZ does, visit their website, or if you’d like a simple way to support them to improve the lives of children and their families in Latin America, you can do that at The Good Registry.

We have created two simple ways to give:

  • Create your own Good Registry for a special event (e.g. a wedding or a birthday - like Loren has) and ask friends to donate to a charity you choose, instead of buying gifts.
  • Give Good Gift Cards instead of traditional gifts, to enable others to make donations to charities they care about.

You can hear from people who have used Good Registries and Good Gift Cards to help charities like NPH, on our inspirational Giving Wall.
