New data shows causes funders seek to support most

New data from Fundsorter, a charity fund-seeking assistance platform, has highlighted the causes that New Zealand funders are seeking to support the most.

The Fundsorter data analysed 2000 funding opportunities and coded them into 37 different cause types.

The results are fascinating, showing environment is the cause that these funders are most commonly prioritising.

Meanwhile there are some areas that funders seem light on. Only 0.7 percent of funds explicitly mention family or sexual violence. Only 1.3% of funding in Aotearoa prioritises rainbow communities, when 1 in 10 New Zealanders identify as LGBTQIA+.

There’s traditionally been limited data on the not for profit and funding sectors in New Zealand, so data like this is really useful to spark conversation and debate and inform decision making.

At the Good Registry, we’re big supporters of services like Fundsorter. They seek to reduce the time and wasted effort charities put into fundraising - leveraging AI to do this efficiently for all parties.

We love that they’re analysing this data and publicising it to support informed decision making.

If you're a giver, we encourage you to check out the data and see how the causes you support fare compared with funder priority areas.

And if you're a charity, we recommend you consider using Fundsorter services. They’re a bit like us in that the more people that use them, the more good they can do.

The Fundsorter data analysed contestable grant rounds. It doesn’t cover the funding that grantmakers and philanthropists give proactively to organisations - which can often be quite large and multi-year grants.

It also doesn’t cover generous individuals and organisations that choose to give charity donations instead of gifts! We’re the ultimate in allowing the donations to go to the causes people care about most directly.

So do consider giving Good Gift Cards this Christmas instead of a traditional present. And if you’re a charity, please promote the opportunity for people to be generous in their Xmas giving and help make sure that gifts go where they’re most needed.
