Creative ideas for dealing with unwanted Christmas gifts

By Gabriel Fisher -

Christmas is a season of joy, family, and giving. But, let’s be honest – it’s also a time when many of us receive gifts that, while goodhearted, may not be what we want or need.

A couple of weeks after Christmas, that uncertainty about what to do with those gifts has probably turned into a clear realisation: they’re not for us. However, instead of letting these items collect dust or, worse, end up in landfill, consider these five thoughtful and sustainable ways to deal with unwanted Christmas gifts.

1. Upcycle or repurpose

Give your unwanted gifts a new lease on life whilst exercising your creativity. That scarf could become a new cushion cover, or those extra mugs might make excellent planters for your kitchen herbs, maybe even as vessels to store stationery. Upcycling reduces waste as well as adding a personal touch, whilst boosting the initial sentimentality of the gift. Countless tutorials online can help inspire your next DIY project, transforming gifts with new purposes. Additionally, these projects can then be converted into upcycled gifts to give to someone else.

2. Regift

Regifting has become more accepted as a sustainable practice, provided it’s done thoughtfully. If you know someone who would genuinely appreciate an item you received, why not pass it on? Just ensure the gift is something the recipient would enjoy, and try to avoid regifting within the same social circle to prevent any awkwardness.

3. Donate to charity shops

Charity shops are always in need of quality items to sell. By donating your unwanted gifts, you’re supporting these organisations in raising funds for their causes. Your unworn sweater or unopened puzzle could bring joy to someone else less fortunate. Before donating, make sure all items are in great nick and check with your local charity shop for any specific policies they may have.

4. Support shelters and refuges

Many shelters and refuges also rely on donations to provide essentials to those in need. Items like warm clothing, toys, and general household goods are often in high demand at homeless shelters and women's refuges. Your unwanted gifts could make a significant difference in someone’s life. Consider contacting local shelters to see what items they need most to see if you can give the gift of comfort and care to someone else this Christmas.

5. Organise a gift swap

Gather friends or family for a gift swap. Everyone brings their unwanted gifts, and you can trade items with each other. A gift that you can't or wouldn't use might be exactly what someone else hoped for! It’s a fun way to reduce waste, enjoy each other’s company, and find new homes for those gifts. Plus, it’s another excuse to see your loved ones again for another event.
